EHPLABS LUST BAR REVIEW - 25 June 2019

Proteins bars; the hopefully-not-too-guilty pleasure of gym-goers, athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike. They can be a bit of good, kind of bad, sort of tasty. They vary wildly on those characteristics but hopefully a mix of all three.

This has definitely not been lost on EHPlabs as their brief product intro states, “Lust Natural Protein bars have been created for those people looking for a sinfully good taste and an excellent macronutrient profile”.

EHPlabs have been known for their awesome flavours across their entire range so this is a release we’ve been looking forward to for a long time and we’re hopeful they will hit the mark.

Ingredients and Macros

EHPlabs are touting this as a natural protein bar, with no artificial sweeteners, flavours or colours.  Notably the sugars are derived from natural fruit sources (mostly pear puree it seems).

They have included a big blend of protein sources in their formula with calcium caseinate, WPI, milk protein concentrate and hydrolysed collagen.

Lastly they’ve also highlighted the addition of Prebiotics, B-Vitamins and Vitamin D-3, there is a clear focus on catering for health-conscious consumers with these bars.

This translates to a pretty respectable macronutrient profile, with the bars averaging around 215cals, 18grams of protein, 4grams of carbs and 6.8grams of fat each. We’ve put together a small comparison chart below, for reference these are all chocolate brownie flavoured bars or similar.

The Lust Bars come out as the most calorie-dense, however most of the bars are pretty close together in all aspects. Depending on the flavour, these figures can vary by around 10-15% in most bars on the market so in all there’s not a lot to split them. We should of course mention the one outlier in the ATP Science NoWay Bar, coming in at a much lighter 167cals whilst packing a bigger protein hit. However these bars give a vastly different taste experience being much closer to a thick chewy jelly lolly than a standard chocolate bar, we’ve included it as a point of reference only.

Flavours and Taste

Our team has enjoyed thoroughly testing each of the Lust Bar flavours and can honestly say they’re the best range of protein bars we have tried, they’re about as close to a chocolate bar as you could get.

Importantly they’ve avoided some of the big downfalls of other popular bars, likely due to the mix of natural ingredients (eg. the hydrolysed collagen and natural fruit sugars). We found that they’re all soft and chewy but without a gummy texture, the chocolate actually tastes like real chocolate (because it is ) and there’s no nasty artificially sweet or overly-concentrated-protein aftertastes.

Lust Bars are launching with four flavours all in the chocolate bar-style area as mentioned and they all pleasantly taste as expected. The Caramel White Chocolate is the sweetest by far, followed by the rich Five-Texture Chocolate Cake, while the Mint Chocolate is spot on, tasting just like a mint slice biscuit. The pick of the bunch for us is the Dark Chocolate Honeycomb flavour, hitting just the right amount of sweetness and richness, plus the dark chocolate on this one makes it taste not quite so naughty.

We did find that although they don’t taste dense or heavy, they’re definitely not the lightest snack in the protein world. Some of our testers struggled to finish off a few of the bars which has us thinking they might have been better off at a slightly smaller serving size. This will obviously vary by the individual and might ultimately depend on if you’re using these bars as a replacement for a different protein snack or a standard chocolate bar. This could very easily be a positive as well though as we don’t think you’ll be searching for another snack shortly after polishing one of these off.

Verdict

EHPlabs have produced a seriously good protein bar with their Lust Bars, easily some of the best on the market. All the flavours are thoroughly enjoyable and taste as you would hope, avoiding the nasty textures and aftertastes of other bars.

With the chocolate coatings these might not travel too well in a gym bag so we think these will be best served as a (reasonably) healthy way to satisfy your sweet-tooth cravings, a worthwhile addition to your top desk drawer at work or the pantry for a late-night snack. EHPlabs set out to create a “sinfully good tasting bar” and they’ve definitely delivered on that.
